Are Peptide Medications (GLP-1 and GIP) Right for You? Let’s Talk About Eligibility

The image features a box of Ozempic (semaglutide) injection, discussing eligibility for peptide medications (GLP-1 and GIP).

Medications like Semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy) and Tirzepatide (Mounjaro, Zepbound) have become powerful tools for managing diabetes, weight loss and metabolic health, but they’re not a one-size-fits-all solution. At Telluride Regional Medical Center, providers evaluate your full health history, goals, and risks to determine whether these medications are the right and safest option for you. Peptide therapy requires regular dosing and adherence to instructions for safety and effectiveness.

Peptide therapy is generally considered for patients hoping to lose 15 pounds or more, and providers take BMI and age into account when deciding whether medication is appropriate. Many individuals exploring GLP-1 therapy are managing other conditions, including prediabetes, hypertension, heart failure, coronary artery disease, PCOS, infertility, sleep apnea, alcohol use disorder, or a family history of Alzheimer’s. For these patients, GLP-1s may be a supportive part of improving overall health when used thoughtfully.

There are also strict contraindications. Anyone with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia type 2 (MEN 2) should not use semaglutide or tirzepatide because of the potential risk of thyroid C-cell tumors observed in animal studies. These medications are also not appropriate for patients with known allergies to their components, those who are pregnant, or individuals with severe gastrointestinal diseases.

Some conditions don’t rule out treatment but require extra caution. A history of pancreatitis, significant kidney disease, or the use of certain diabetes medications—especially insulin—means your provider will monitor more closely to avoid complications like hypoglycemia.

GLP-1 medications can offer meaningful results, but they work best when paired with medical guidance, lifestyle support, and a clear sense of your long-term health goals. If you’re wondering whether semaglutide or tirzepatide is right for you, the best next step is a conversation with your provider. At TMC, we’re here to help you understand your options and choose the path that supports your whole-body wellbeing.
